Employment

Employees are the most important assets of any company. WNC maintains corporate recruitment principles of "respect for human rights" and "the right person in the right position", as well as ensuring that the whole recruitment process conforms to all labor regulations and gender equality guidelines in employment law.

Employee professionalism is the key factor in the whole recruitment process. We never consider individual gender, age, race, religion, or political affiliation as an advantage or drawback during evaluation. All participants have an equal opportunity to express their capabilities in an open and transparent recruitment process. Personnel from the recruitment affairs department also regularly participate in diverse training programs on our interview processes, which include interview skills and the use of specialized evaluation tools.

Human rights and legal rights of the disabled are important concerns of WNC. We encourage the recruitment of disabled colleagues that have professional skills to contribute. In 2010, there were 14 disabled employees working for WNC, including six mild, one moderate and four severely disabled colleagues. They cover a wide range of job functions such as masseurs, production line operators, engineers, expatriate employees and special assistants. In 2011, one mild and one severely disabled employee joined WNC. We will continue to assess appropriate positions for disabled persons to ensure that the disabled employee ratio of this company conforms to government laws. In addition, in accordance with the Labor Standards Law, WNC does not hire persons under the age of 16.

Total number of employees in Taiwan, 2008-2010

As of the end of December, 2010, the total number of worldwide WNC employees was 8238, of which 1634 employees are located in Taiwan, including 1101 indirect labor (IDL) employees and 533 direct labor (DL) employees. The percentage of female employees was 45.6%. 56.4% of our colleagues are aged between 26 and 35 and almost half of all employees have worked for WNC for over 4 years, which indicates that our younger generation of employees are willing to grow with WNC.

The performance appraisal system of WNC was developed by considering both corporate operational efficiency and the development of competencies by each employee. Performance is evaluated according to two parameters, behavior and objectives. Performance in terms of both quality and quantity will be examined simultaneously and periodically, and the results will serve as the basis for giving appropriate rewards or promotions to employees.

Employees are the key assets of WNC. A wide variety of actions are taken to attract more capable and highly skilled employees to stay and grow with WNC. We implement different programs based on employee work experience and management levels, which include guidance of new hires, employee care/motivation, rewards for well-performing and long service employees, internal transfers, wage structure adjustments and improvement of management systems. We proactively develop a working environment with a competitive and comprehensive welfare system. The gradually decreasing turnover rate, which is lower than the industry average, also indicates the excellent performance of our retention programs.

WNC regularly adjusts employee salaries to provide reasonable remuneration for colleagues, as well as to maintain and attract more highly capable employees. And, in order to take into consideration other factors including stockholder rights, colleague quality of life, and sustainable development of this company, employee wages are regularly adjusted according to current price levels, market demand/supply status, average industry salary levels, and local laws/regulations. All well-performing employees and departments are also motivated by various bonuses and reward systems without any bias of gender, age, race, religion, or political affiliation.

Besides participating in Labor Insurance and the National Health Insurance, and contributing employee wages to their retirement accounts according to Article 55 and 56 of the Labor Standards Act law, all WNC regular employees also enjoy a group insurance plan that WNC provides, which allows colleagues and their families more protection against health hazards and accidents. All WNC regular and contract employees also enjoy longer annual leaves than that is specified in the Labor Standards Act. For the comfort of long-term expatriate employees, some extra benefits or services are also available, which include expatriate allowances, travel/meal allowances, housing allowances for family members traveling with the expatriate employee, education allowances for their children, airplane tickets for expatriate employees’ family members, periodic meetings/discussions, and airport transfer services.

Occupational Safety and Health Management

WNC emphasizes and proactively performs numerous risk assessments, periodically manages the changes that are related to occupational safety and health, and controls the influences that each change may cause. Internal and external audit activities are held every year to ensure that the occupational safety and health system is functioning well and is improving. A labor safety and health committee is also organized according to the Labor Safety and Health Act.

To effectively maintain workplace safety and minimize employee health hazards, we evaluate workplace conditions periodically according to government laws regarding the monitoring of the workplace environment. The target measuring items include lead, organic solvents, illumination, carbon dioxide and noise. The carbon dioxide monitoring system is installed all around the office and factory areas. Employees can check the concentration of indoor carbon dioxide anytime. To quicken reaction times to emergencies, each WNC employee is organized into fire-prevention teams on a department basis. We also hold traffic & safety forums, health forums, health enhancement activities, occupational safety and health training and annual fire-prevention training to help colleagues have better awareness of personal health care and occupational safety concerns.

The Gardeners are department representatives who are elected by each department. WNC’s CEO serves as the committee president and appoints two administrators to be responsible for the operation of the Gardener Committee.  Committee meetings are held quarterly, and can also be held when the president or more than a third of Gardener Committee members agree to hold a provisional committee meeting.
